The Edge of Appalachia Preserve System provides a wide range of educational opportunities for those who are interested in broadening their knowledge of Ohio’s history. Whether you are a professional in the natural resources field, educator or parent, you can find a workshop, lesson plan, nature-based activity, or conference that is right for you.

Lucy Braun: A Force for Nature
A Force for Nature: Lucy Braun is a one-hour documentary that explores the life and legacy of E. Lucy Braun, one of the foremost botanists and ecologists in American history. The production team, in collaboration with Cincinnati Museum Center, have developed educational materials to supplement this documentary. Lesson plans cover a wide variety of topics in science, social studies, history, language arts and math and are appropriate for upper elementary grades through high school.
Advanced Naturalist Workshops
The Advanced Naturalist Workshops are unique learning experiences for those interested in delving deeper into Ohio's flora and fauna. Taught by experts in their fields these workshops are intended for the serious student of nature be they a professional or lay person. Learn more about often understudied organisms alongside other dedicated students of the eastern woods while helping to build the preserve's biodiversity database.
Educators at the Edge
These are day-long workshops that will provide participants with new, experiential learning opportunities. Topics are focused on natural history with an emphasis on gaining new skills to be used with students. These exciting classes are open to classroom teachers, naturalists, and other non-traditional educators. Graduate credit through Ashland University is available as well as up to 30 contact hours.
Educators Week: Where East Meets West and North Meets South
Educators’ Week is a gathering of formal and non-formal educators who are pursuing new knowledge and teaching techniques at the Edge of Appalachia Preserve System in beautiful Adams County, Ohio. Educators’ Week provides opportunities to gain an understanding of topics related to state academic standards by being immersive in a natural setting and creating a supportive learning environment. Participants attend sessions that will explore hands-on best practice strategies for introducing people to the natural world. Attendees will learn from top experts in their field on a wide range of cross curricular topics and explore new methods that will improve their skills as educators. By the conclusion of this unique, retreat-like conference, participants will come away with a renewed sense of wonder, a feeling of community and kinship and the confidence to share their new knowledge with others.

Environmental Education
The Edge of Appalachia Preserve System has a robust and unique environmental education program through a partnership with Adams County school districts. When students journey to the preserve, we do not consider them to be on a traditional field trip. These students are participating in an extended science class that takes place out-of-doors!
